Tips!!

Tip of the day

Dogs usually enjoy cheese and other dairy products in small amounts, but many dogs suffer from lactose intolerance as they get older. This is a condition in which the body does not manufacture enough of the enzyme lactase needed for proper digestion of lactose, the sugars found in dairy products. The most common symptoms are excessive gas, stomachache and diarrhea. Monitor your dog's intake of dairy products to determine whether she can handle them.

No matter how careful you are, moisture will collect in your dog's ears after a bath. For long-haired, floppy-eared dogs, ear dampness can be a problem. To help the ears dry up and to avoid moisture related infections and yeast troubles, gently turn his ears inside out (it does not hurt or annoy) and pull both ears back behind his head loosely. Using a rubber band, gently but firmly, using only the fur at the tips and avoiding the skin flap, rubber band his ears open and back behind his head. In a few hours, the ear canals will have dried out and you may release the ears from the rubber band.

Highly palatable pumpkin is liked by dogs and their owners who recognize its nutritional benefits. This superfood is loaded with beta-carotene, which aids in cancer prevention, reduces inflammation and regulates Vitamin A. Vitamin C boosts basic immune functions, and the presence of Vitamin E also helps maintain healthy skin and coat. Pumpkin is also high in fiber, which is vital to your dog's digestive health. A small amount of canned or fresh pumpkin puree is often recommended for dogs with upset stomachs and it is even known to help dogs who suffer from motion sickness. Stay away from pumpkin pie mix as it is loaded with sugar.

Teaching a dog to stay or come back should begin in puppyhood, as this is the time that dogs are most likely to stick with their human 'pack'. Choose safe, secure places and walk away from your pup as he watches. His curiosity and need for reassurance will soon get the better of him.

When your dog is teething, instead of have him chewing on couches, walls etc. Buy a few (cheap) wash clothes. Soak the wash cloth and put it ion the freezer. When fully frozen give it to the dog to chew, it will thaw out so have another one ready in the freezer. (be careful when doing this with very small dogs, as they may get a chill.)
