While the focus of most media is on the tragic events of that terrible day, Yahoo News ran a poignant slideshow featuring some of the 13 canine members of the Search Dog Foundation who searched for victims. We remember and honor the human rescuers and the thousands of victims of 9/11, we can do the same for these heroic dogs.

To train your pup to be a search dog, I believe its double the effort we train and discipline our furry kids.
2. The Rottweiler. This may be a surprising choice of top 5 search dog training breeds due to it’s negative press attention. It is largely seen as a mean and dangerous dog, but is actually a very popular search dog training breed. This is because it is a highly intelligent dog and good natured if trained properly. The Rottweiler can be very loyal to it’s family and very obedient, which makes it adaptable to several roles. The Rottweiler is just as capable of being a guard dog as being used in service and can make a loving family pet.
3. The German Shepherd. German Shepherd dogs, or Alsatians were originally breed as working dogs, mainly for herding sheep. They have both strength and intelligence and can be very obedient. This is the reason they are frequently used by the police force and the military. They make for a loving family member as well as a trusted guard dog. They bond well with people they know, however they can become over-protective if not socialized properly.
4. The Golden Retriever. This breed of dog is probably one of the best loved and well known in the category of search dog training breed. They are well known for their intelligence and versatility. They are extremely friendly and wanting to please their owners. They have a patient demeanour, which has made them one of the most popular family dogs. The Golden Retriever is highly compatible with children as well as other dogs, cats and livestock. They have a high level of sociability towards people, with a calmness and ability to learn. Because of these positive attributes they are one of the breeds of dogs used for guide dogs for the blind and mobility assistance dogs as well as search and rescue dogs.
5. Final top 5 search dog training breed is the Collie. Probably well known for it’s role as Lassie and often referred to as a Lassie dog. Originally bred as herding dogs, this attribute is probably why they have a constant desire to keep an eye on their family. It is one of the most popular family dogs. The Collie is friendly and alert and very protective to it’s owners. Collies are gentle dogs, with a sweet personality. They are very easy to train, but do need constant discipline.
